You took a rock to the windshield on I-290 yesterday. Now you're sitting in your driveway in Tonawanda wondering: is this covered by my insurance, or am I writing a check?
Good news for most New York drivers: if you carry comprehensive coverage, the answer is almost always yes, this is covered, and often with no deductible on repair.
Here's exactly how New York windshield insurance works, what to look for in your policy, and how to file in 10 minutes.
The two coverages that matter
Auto insurance has several parts. For windshield damage, two of them matter:
- Liability — pays for damage you cause to others. Does not cover your windshield.
- Collision — pays for damage from hitting another vehicle or object. Sometimes covers windshield, but it's the wrong category.
- Comprehensive ("Comp" / "Other Than Collision") — pays for damage from things outside your control: theft, fire, vandalism, weather, animals, and road debris hitting your vehicle. This is what covers your windshield.
In New York, liability coverage is mandatory. Comprehensive is optional but commonly carried, especially on financed or leased vehicles (lenders require it).
If you have comprehensive, your windshield is covered. If you don't, it's not.
How to check if you have comprehensive
Three quick paths:
- Look at your insurance card or declarations page. It will list "Comprehensive" or "Other Than Collision" with a coverage limit and a deductible. If you see any deductible amount listed, you have comp.
- Open your insurer's app. Most show coverages in your policy summary.
- Call your agent or carrier. One-minute phone call.
If you're on a financed or leased vehicle, you almost certainly have comp coverage — your lender required it.
The no-deductible glass repair perk
Here's the part many drivers don't know: most NY carriers waive your comp deductible for glass repair.
Your policy might list a real comprehensive deductible. For a windshield repair (chip fix), that deductible often doesn't apply at all — the insurer pays the shop directly and you pay nothing.
Why? Pure math from the insurer's side. A small chip repair today prevents a full replacement claim later. Waiving the deductible on the cheap fix saves them money long-term.
For replacement (full glass swap), your comprehensive deductible normally does apply.
Common carriers and their typical NY glass treatment:
| Carrier | Repair Deductible | Replacement Deductible | |---|---|---| | Geico | Often waived | Standard comp deductible | | Progressive | Often waived | Standard comp deductible | | State Farm | Often waived (varies) | Standard comp deductible | | Allstate | Often waived (most policies) | Standard comp deductible | | USAA | Often waived | Standard comp deductible | | Liberty Mutual | Often waived (most policies) | Standard comp deductible | | Erie | Often waived (most policies) | Standard comp deductible | | NYCM | Often waived (most policies) | Standard comp deductible |
Always confirm with your specific policy — coverage details can vary between policies even at the same carrier.
Full glass riders — what they are and when they're worth it
A "full glass rider" or "auto glass option" is an add-on that gives you no deductible on both repair and replacement. It typically adds a small monthly cost to your premium in NY.
When it's worth it:
- You drive long highway miles daily (more rock strikes)
- You've replaced a windshield in the past 2-3 years
- You park outdoors year-round in WNY weather
- You drive through construction zones or behind gravel haulers regularly
When it's not:
- Low-mileage driver, garage-kept
- You haven't had glass damage in 5+ years
- Your vehicle is older and you're comfortable paying out of pocket
Math check: the rider costs you a small annual premium add-on. A full replacement costs many times that. Break-even is typically one replacement every few years.
What insurers actually pay
For repair, insurers typically pay the shop their standard repair rate, which varies by damage complexity. When the deductible is waived, you pay nothing.
For replacement, insurers pay the shop based on their negotiated rate for your specific vehicle. You pay your deductible.
There's no cap on how many glass claims you can file (within reason). Insurers don't blacklist you for one or two legitimate windshield claims. They do start to flag patterns at 3+ comp claims in 24 months.
How to file a windshield claim in New York
Two paths, both simple:
Path 1: Call your insurance directly
- Call your insurer's claims line (number on your insurance card)
- Say "I have glass-only damage to my windshield" — this routes you to their glass desk
- They transfer you to their third-party glass administrator (Safelite Solutions, LYNX Services, Glass America, or similar)
- The administrator asks for your preferred shop — you can request us: Buffalo Windshield Chip and Crack Repair
- They authorize the work, set up the appointment, and the administrator handles billing with the insurer
- You pay nothing (for deductible-waived repairs) or your deductible (for replacements)
Path 2: Call us first
- Text a photo of the damage to (716) 548-2683
- We assess and quote
- We 3-way call your insurance with you on the line
- We verify coverage, get authorization, and schedule the appointment
- Ask us about insurance billing — we'll walk you through how it works for your specific carrier
Path 2 is usually faster because we handle the paperwork while you focus on your day.
What if you don't have comprehensive?
If you only have liability coverage, your windshield is not covered. Your options:
- Pay out of pocket. Repair costs a fraction of replacement. Text us a photo at (716) 548-2683 for an honest quote in under 60 seconds.
- Add comprehensive at renewal. Most carriers will let you add comp mid-policy too, but it won't cover a damage event that already happened.
- Check for discounts — some shops offer cash discounts on direct-pay repairs.
We don't add a markup to cash customers. The price is the price, insured or not.
Top carriers we work with in WNY
In Western New York, we regularly file with:
- Geico
- Progressive
- State Farm
- Allstate
- USAA
- Erie Insurance
- Liberty Mutual
- NYCM Insurance
- Travelers
- Nationwide
- MetLife
- Plymouth Rock
- Most regional and specialty NY carriers
If your carrier isn't listed, we still likely work with them. We file with whatever carrier you have.
A note on the "preferred shop" pressure
When you call to file a glass claim, the administrator might suggest a specific shop they prefer. You are not required to use their preferred shop. Under New York law, you have the right to choose your glass repair shop. You can request us by name and they have to authorize it.
If you feel pressured, politely repeat: "I'd like to use Buffalo Windshield Chip and Crack Repair for this work. Please authorize them as my chosen provider." That's the magic sentence.
Filing tips that save time
- Have your insurance card ready when you call
- Know your VIN (on dashboard near windshield or driver's door jamb)
- Have a photo of the damage to describe what you're dealing with
- Know your shop preference before you call (mention us)
- Ask if your deductible is waived for repair vs. replacement
Bottom line
If you have comprehensive coverage in New York, your windshield is covered, and chip repair is almost always covered with no deductible. Filing takes 10 minutes, the work happens in your driveway, and the insurance company would much rather pay for the repair today than the replacement next month. There is no reason to drive on a chipped windshield if you have comp coverage.
