Filing a Windshield Claim with State Farm in Buffalo, NY
State Farm is the #2 carrier in NY, and they’re notably more flexible than the national carriers about letting you choose your own shop. Here’s how their claim process works, the full glass option you should check for on your policy, and what to say when you call.

How State Farm handles windshield claims in New York
State Farm sits right behind GEICO on New York market share and has a noticeably different culture around glass claims — more agent-driven, more open about shop choice. If you have a local State Farm agent in WNY, that agent is usually your first call, and many will start the claim for you over the phone before you ever touch an app.
If you would rather skip the agent step, you can file directly in the State Farm mobile app or at statefarm.com/claims. The phone path is 1-800-732-5246 (1-800-SF-CLAIM), which is one number for all auto claims including glass. State Farm typically opens the claim immediately and gives you a decision within 24 to 48 hours, sometimes faster if your agent is involved.
State Farm uses Safelite Solutions as their assigned glass network — the same vendor GEICO uses — and the app and the 1-800 line will both offer to book you directly with Safelite. The State Farm difference, in our experience, is that their reps are noticeably less aggressive about pushing it. If you say up front that you have a shop in mind, they will usually accept that without two or three rounds of pushback.
Why you can choose your own glass shop
Like every other New York carrier, State Farm cannot force you into their assigned glass network. NY consumer protection law gives you the explicit right to pick any licensed glass shop in the state, and the carrier is required to cover the work as long as it is within your policy. The “preferred network” language on State Farm’s side is a convenience option, not a requirement.
Where State Farm policies sit slightly differently than GEICO: many State Farm reps are comfortable initiating a third-party glass claim directly, without rerouting through Safelite’s scheduling system at all. That means you can sometimes get a claim number, coverage confirmation, and a payment authorization in a single call without anyone trying to schedule a competing appointment. Not always — it depends on the rep — but more often than with the national carriers.
The script when you call State Farm: “I’d like to use my own shop — Buffalo Windshield Chip and Crack Repair in Buffalo, NY. Can you open the claim and set me up to submit the invoice for reimbursement?” Phrasing it that way tells the rep you are not asking them to schedule the appointment, just to authorize the coverage. That usually moves things along faster.
Deductibles and the full glass option
State Farm offers a full glass option in New York as an add-on to comprehensive coverage. It waives the deductible on glass claims specifically — repair and replacement both. It is not on every policy, but it is genuinely common — more common on State Farm than on most other carriers. If you have it, you file every glass claim. If you do not, the standard comprehensive deductible on your policy applies to replacement (not to most repairs).
How to figure out which one you have: log into the State Farm app, open your auto policy, look at the comprehensive line. If you see a separate Glass coverage entry with the deductible explicitly waived, you have the rider. If comprehensive is the only line, your standard deductible applies to a windshield replacement.
- ·Chip or crack repair: file. State Farm waives the deductible on repair in almost every New York policy because repair prevents the much more expensive replacement down the road.
- ·Replacement with the full glass option on your policy: file. The deductible is waived.
- ·Replacement, no glass rider, cost under deductible: pay out of pocket. A claim filed below deductible accomplishes nothing.
- ·Replacement, no glass rider, cost over deductible: file. State Farm pays the difference.
What State Farm pays for
State Farm covers glass damage under comprehensive coverage. As with every other carrier, if you carry only liability or only collision, glass is not covered. Comp is the bucket.
On ADAS recalibration, State Farm covers it when the manufacturer requires it after a replacement — same general standard as the rest of the industry. They are slightly less paperwork-heavy about it than GEICO. A line item on the invoice usually clears it, though we still attach the calibration printout on every claim to keep things clean.
On OEM vs. aftermarket glass, State Farm’s default is aftermarket unless the vehicle requires OEM — same general posture as GEICO. They will approve OEM when the part requires it (HUD windshields, certain rain-sensor brackets, certain Subaru EyeSight configurations). Get the OEM requirement documented from the vehicle manufacturer before you call and the approval is usually clean.
Working with us on a State Farm claim
Same straight version as on every page on this site. We are not in State Farm’s preferred glass network. State Farm uses Safelite Solutions as their assigned vendor. We are an independent Buffalo shop. But again — and this is the part most people miss — you do not have to use their network. NY law lets you choose, and State Farm is genuinely more relaxed about that choice than most national carriers.
On billing: most of our State Farm customers pay us at time of service and submit the invoice to State Farm for reimbursement. State Farm is usually the easiest carrier to reimburse against because their app accepts photo uploads of receipts directly and turnaround is typically a few business days. We’ll give you a written estimate before any work starts and a finalized invoice when we’re done — both formatted to drop straight into the State Farm app.
We do ADAS recalibration in-house on most makes and models. That means one appointment, one location, glass and camera both done — and a single line on the invoice when you submit. State Farm processes that combined invoice as one item, which is cleaner than splitting it across two shops.
State Farm windshield-claim questions
- Does State Farm cover windshield replacement in Buffalo, NY?
- Yes, under your comprehensive coverage. If your policy includes the State Farm full glass option, the deductible on replacement is waived. Otherwise your standard comprehensive deductible applies to a replacement. Repair is almost always covered with the deductible waived.
- How do I file a State Farm windshield claim?
- Three paths. Call your local State Farm agent (often the fastest because they can open the claim and authorize coverage on the spot), file in the State Farm mobile app under Auto > Glass Damage, or call 1-800-732-5246 (1-800-SF-CLAIM). State Farm typically issues a decision within 24 to 48 hours.
- Can I choose Buffalo Windshield instead of State Farm’s preferred network?
- Yes. NY consumer protection law lets you choose any licensed glass shop regardless of State Farm’s preferred-network steering toward Safelite Solutions. When you file, say "I’d like to use my own shop — Buffalo Windshield Chip and Crack Repair in Buffalo, NY. Can you authorize coverage and let me submit the invoice for reimbursement?" State Farm reps are generally more receptive to this than the national carriers.
- Will my State Farm premium go up after a windshield claim?
- Glass damage is filed under comprehensive coverage, not collision. New York Insurance Law generally prevents premium increases from a single comprehensive claim. State Farm explicitly treats glass claims as low-impact — a windshield repair or replacement claim, on its own, almost never affects your renewal.
- Does State Farm cover ADAS recalibration after a windshield replacement?
- Yes, when the vehicle manufacturer requires it — which is the case on most 2017-and-newer vehicles with lane-keep, adaptive cruise, or forward collision warning. State Farm is among the less paperwork-intensive carriers on this. A line-item invoice usually clears the calibration approval.
- What’s State Farm’s phone number for windshield claims?
- 1-800-732-5246 (1-800-SF-CLAIM) handles all auto claims including glass. Your local State Farm agent is often a faster route — many will open the claim directly over the phone. The State Farm mobile app and statefarm.com/claims also handle glass claims.
